Interview Questions

Tell Me About Yourself Sample Answers For Fresh Graduates {2023}

“Tell Me About Yourself” is one of the most important and most common interview questions that is asked at first when you are giving an interview. Although, talking about yourself is quite easy as you know yourself better, yet you feel stressed to respond to this question. The reasons can be many such as you don’t know where to start, what to tell exactly about you or you are not able to think if you should talk about your personal life or professional life or something else. At times, you have so many things to say about yourself, that you get confused about where to start, and how to say everything well.

Due to these things going in mind, you may end up answering this simple question without any confidence, and that is where there are chances of not being selected as the interviewer may not be pleased.

The most important thing you need to know is that the interviewer has nothing to do with your life-story, all he/she wants to see is how you react, and how well you speak up the question. However, there is much more to know to prepare for the question “tell me about yourself”.

So, let’s discuss this in more detail.

Why Interviewers Ask “Tell Me About Yourself”?

To be able to answer this question perfectly, you must know the intention of the interviewer for asking this particular question. Let me tell you that they are not much interested in your personal life, and they are not asking to listen to a long speech about you.  They ask this question for multiple reasons which may be as:

  • They want to see how you react to this question because this question is not something technical, it is about you, and you can say a lot about yourself but, how you respond, is what they want to see.
  • Another reason could be as they would want to get a general idea about you.
  • At times, they point out a few things from your response to make further questions.
  • They may want to get an idea as if you talk industry-specific or just respond in a very general manner.

In short, this question is generally asked to see how well you respond, what you speak, and howe well you relate things to the industry you are going to work in.

Common Mistakes You Must not Make while Answering to “tell me about yourself” Question

  1. Telling Your Story

When you are asked this question, the simplest answer everyone can think of is telling their life story. That is the mistake that you may do because the interviewer is not much interested in your life story actually.

An example of such not-so-good answer,

I am Kevin, and I was born and raised in New York. My hobbies are singing, dancing, and playing soccer. I have played for my school’s Soccer team, and won accolades for the same. I have taken part in many dancing competitions as well. I am a well-organized man, and I love to manage things well. Due to this, I am quite interested in making a career in Management.

See, this answer looks quite easy to speak out, and a good one but the thing is the interviewer has nothing to do with your skills in soccer-playing or dancing because you are here trying to get the job as manager.

So, avoid this mistake when you are asked this question, and keep it short. You must finish your answer to this particular question within 1 minute or less because they don’t have much time as they have to ask other questions as well, and more importantly, they expect many other applicants as well for the interview.

  1. Asking the interviewer What Exactly they want to Know

Well, the question “tell me about yourself” is an unstructured question but that doesn’t mean you ask a question to the interviewer rather than directly answering that. You have to be prepared for both the structured and unstructured interview questions as that is what the Interview is all about. You are not just tested for the skills you are going to use in the work you apply for, in fact, you are tested for your prompt responding and speaking capabilities as well.

As you can see in the above answer, the applicant has mentioned more about his relation to the business because he is applying for a project management type of job. He sticks to the main point mostly rather than talking more about himself. He just said 1 line about himself and moved to talk about his studies and what he wants to do.
